Is Your Wagon Empty or Full?

Is your wagon empty or full?

One of the stories in Joanna Weaver’s book,
Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World,
captures this point very well.

The story begins with God asking a man to
carry a wagon to the top of a mountain;
the man happily agreed to perform this task.

Along the way he encountered many people who
also needed help carrying things to the top
of the mountain. The man piled their things
in his wagon, since he was going up there anyway.

Eventually the wagon became too heavy for the
man to carry. The man then blamed God for giving
him a burden that was too much for him to bear.
How unfair for God to give him more than he could handle!

When he finally reached the top of the mountain,
God confronted him. “Why is your wagon so full?
When you started out, it was empty!”

The man explained that he was trying to help others
by carrying their load to the top of the mountain.
He thought God would be happy that he was helping
so many people!

God responded: “Let others shoulder their own belongings.
I know you were trying to help, but when you are weighted
down with all these cares, you cannot do what I’ve asked
of you. My yoke is easy and my burden is light.
I will never ask you to carry more than you can bear.”

Lesson: We take on so much “stuff” in life;
but that “stuff” may not be what we should be focusing
on to make our lives fulfilling and happy. It’s okay to
say no to what makes you busy, and yes to what makes you happy!

It’s a tough balance between doing what you think you
should be doing and doing what’s best for you in order
to have true balance and freedom in life.

It is this balance that brings ultimate happiness.
