I’m too busy!

Submitted by   on May 21, 2009

I’m slammed!

I’m so busy!

My head is swimming!

I feel overwhelmed!

Sound familiar?

Have you ever caught yourself saying things like that?

Do you find yourself too busy to do the things you want to do?

I know I do.

We live in a world that is moving faster than it ever has and in order to keep up we try to move just as fast.

The problem is we end up so busy, rather too busy, to do the important things.

Are you too busy to play a game with your kids when you get home from work? Are you too tired to read them a story when you tuck them into bed?

What about too busy to return a family member’s call? Too busy to send a thank you note?

These statements are really just excuses. We are excusing our actions by saying we are too busy to do something. But the truth is, we have time to do other things so we are choosing to be “too busy” to do the important things.

You know how I know all this?

Because I am guilty of it. I’m embarrassed to say that this is how I have been living the last few weeks. I have been busy, and with legitimate reasons, but I’ve let important things slip by in order to take care of the most urgent issues. By urgent, I mean the issues that are most pressing….emails, phone calls, etc. These things may not be as important as other things but we tend to get distracted by these “distractions” which leave us little time to get important tasks done.

The part that really gets me is….I know better! I know how to overcome procrastination. I know how to manage my time. I know how to make priorities in life and stick to them. But, guess what; we can all get trapped in this cycle….even if we know better.

So, what can we do? Well, the obvious answer is to STOP being too busy! Make a task list and stick to that list. Schedule your priorities like working out, time with family, “me time” and commit to doing those things before you even check email and have the chance of getting off course.

I’m going to take my own advice this week because life is too short to be busy and not really live to the fullest. No matter where you are in life, we all need this reminder. No matter how much you “know better”, it’s easy to think you can get those things done tomorrow. But, what if you are not here tomorrow? What if you don’t get another chance?

Live life now while your still in the living years! Get started now but writing down your priorities today and making them happen.

1% activity is better than 100% intention! Don’t make yourself too busy to take that one 1% action today.

You are the best!
