Black Belt Attitude

Submitted by   on April 25, 2009

I was sitting in my son’s karate class the other day and something struck me.

I had been there at least 100 times before, so it’s funny that it just hit me now.

Black Belt Attitude….

What exactly is that?

Well, for those wanting to achieve their Black Belt, it’s pretty darn important.

There is no way to get your Black Belt if you don’t have these skills.

It hit me that karate aside, there is no way to achieve greatness in life without these traits as well.

What am I talking about, you say?

I’m talking about teamwork, respect, integrity and perseverance.  It’s also about modesty, courage, concentration, confidence, self discipline and honesty.

Those traits define a man or woman of greatness in karate and in life.

But, did I even mention anything about karate or fighting skills?

No!  Because in order to BE a Black Belt you have to ACT like a Black Belt.

You have become someone in order to be something!

No matter what we want in life, we first have to become the person that can accomplish that task.

We have to develop our minds (attitude) before we can develop a particular skill.

Like my mentor Zig Ziglar says, “You have to BE before you can DO and you have DO before you can HAVE.”

Focus on having a Black Belt Attitude in your daily life.  Live with purpose, passion and perseverance.  Be an example for those who may be behind you on their journey.  Be a mentor, be a model, be a “Black Belt” in whatever it is that is important to you.

I’m going to leave you with my son’s karate creed which they say before every class.  If kids can believe this and incorporate into their lives, I know you can do the same too!

I will build confidence and character through self discipline and self esteem.  I will be truthful with my dealings with others and treat them with respect and sincerity. I will not use my abilities to harm another person except to protect myself and others, Sir.
